In a landmark transaction approved by Quebec Superior Court, Houston-based Westmont Hospitality Group has acquired the historic Fairmont Le Ch\u00e2teau Montebello from China Evergrande Group’s bankruptcy proceedings. The deal, expected to close November 15, represents a significant shake-up in Canada’s luxury hospitality sector.<\/p>\n

The 96-year-old resort, billed as the world’s largest log cabin, carries considerable prestige\u2014hosting luminaries including Grace Kelly and Margaret Thatcher. Located 130 kilometres west of Montreal, the property features 200+ rooms, an 18-hole golf course, spa facilities, and conference centre.<\/p>\n

Evergrande’s insolvency subsidiary owed $58 million to creditors, including $11 million to a Desjardins Group affiliate. The transaction emerged from 30 initial bids, with a competing group led by Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer offering up to $150 million.<\/p>\n

Westmont, founded in the 1970s, operates 500+ hotels under major brands including Fairmont, Hilton, Marriott, and InterContinental. This acquisition underscores how China’s real estate crisis continues reshaping North American hospitality markets, with distressed assets attracting U.S. operators seeking premium properties.<\/p>\n
