Eviction Rates Higher in Black Toronto Neighbourhoods: Study

A recent study reveals a concerning trend in Toronto’s rental market: financialized landlords are disproportionately applying to evict tenants in predominantly Black neighbourhoods. The study, conducted by Toronto Metropolitan University, found that eviction application rates in these areas were five times higher than the city average for the same landlord group between 2016 and 2019. Researchers argue that profit-driven motives of these landlords are contributing to housing instability and displacement within Black communities.

While eviction filings slowed at the start of the pandemic, the pattern persisted. The report highlights the need to examine the systemic factors contributing to these disparities. Starlight Investments, Toronto’s largest private landlord, was specifically mentioned in the study, though they disagree with the study’s characterization of their eviction filings.
