Cielo Condos Soars: Reaches Halfway Point in Annex

Construction on Cielo Condos, a highly anticipated development in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood, has reached a significant milestone. The project, a collaboration between Collecdev-Markee Developments and designed by KPMB Architects, has reached its halfway point, ascending to 19 storeys out of its planned 34. This progress marks a key stage in the tower’s rise behind the carefully preserved stone walls of Bloor Street United Church, a testament to the project’s commitment to blending modern architecture with historical preservation, overseen by ERA Architects.

Located at the northwest corner of Bloor and Huron streets, Cielo Condos is already making its mark on the Toronto skyline. Recent updates show the tower rising prominently, with formwork in place for the upcoming levels. The distinctive stepped four-storey podium, projecting north towards Bloor Street, is now clearly defined. A notable feature is the stepped cantilever on the east elevation, extending outwards from the seventh floor towards Huron Street. The building will eventually stand 130.35m tall.

The development is not without its complexities. Preserving the Bloor Street United Church facade requires ongoing careful engineering and support. A full-height steel retention scaffold remains in place, ensuring the structural integrity of the historic stone walls. Inside the podium, crews are actively installing mechanical piping, while the meeting room structure interfacing with the church facade awaits final engineering review.

Cielo Condos’ impact extends beyond its architectural design. The project will add 349 residential suites to the Annex, a highly desirable neighbourhood known for its vibrant culture and proximity to the University of Toronto. As construction progresses, the development serves as a barometer of the GTA’s condo market, showcasing the ongoing demand for thoughtfully designed residences in prime locations. The expected completion date is still under wraps, but the current pace of construction suggests a 2026 or early 2027 delivery. Keep an eye on UrbanToronto for further updates on this exciting project.
