Why Real Estate Pros Are Demanding Better Data—and What It Means for You

In commercial real estate, accuracy isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s everything. A single error in property ownership data can derail deals, waste time chasing the wrong contacts, and undermine investment decisions. Altus Group’s Reonomy platform recently undertook a major overhaul of its data infrastructure, rebuilding what executives call the “backbone” of their property intelligence system.

Shubhra Srivastava, SVP of Product Management at Altus Group, explained the shift in approach: rather than treating data quality concerns as a perception problem, the team treated it as an engineering challenge. The rebuild involved introducing new data sources like OpenCorporates, deepening partnerships with providers like Data Axle, and—crucially—reintroducing human review into the verification process.

For GTA investors and real estate professionals, this signals an industry-wide trend: the demand for trustworthy property intelligence is intensifying. As markets become more competitive and deals more complex, relying on accurate ownership resolution, contact details, and comparable sales data has never been more critical.

Srivastava emphasized this isn’t a one-time fix: “Data quality isn’t something you fix once and move on from.” The Reonomy team plans continued rollouts focusing on contact accuracy, sales and loan data verification, and deeper ownership resolution work.

For professionals making deals in the GTA market, the takeaway is clear—your data tools are only as reliable as their underlying infrastructure.
